SANE 2024 Summer Funding Window Now Open!

Seek Common Ground’s Student Action Network for Equity’s summer 2024 funding window has the explicit goal of growing and sustaining youth-and/or intergenerationally led efforts who seek to increase their supporters and influence to defend critical public instructions under attack, including public education. Attached are multiple examples of SANE-funded organizations which meet this description. Our funding process prioritizes organizations with a proactive vision of equity and justice in their schools and communities. Organizations must be student- or intergenerationally led.

To be eligible for our summer funding, email this Request for Funding (RFF) application to SANE’s Manager, Lydia Burns at lydia@seekcommonground.org by Sunday, May 12th, 2024, at 11:59PM (Eastern).

Organizations will be notified of final funding decisions by Wednesday, June 12th, 2024.

If you have any questions, please contact Lydia Burns at Lydia@seekcommonground.org or if you are already in the SANE Slack workspace, message Lydia (@Lydia (she/her)).

Student Action Network for Equity

WHAT IS SANE?

The Student Action Network for Equity (SANE) connects and supports student- and intergenerationally-led groups advancing racial justice, education equity, and the promise of a multiracial democracy. SANE is composed of 80+ organizations activating and empowering youth to transform their schools and communities. SANE network members advance systems change with a variety of tactics: storytelling, community organizing, research, art, advocacy, journalism, and more.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING A PART OF SANE?

Student- and intergenerationally-led groups in the Student Action Network for Equity have access to:

  • A growing network of student and adult leaders advancing education, racial justice, and democracy across the country.

  • A dedicated Slack space to access and share ideas, strategies, research, materials, opportunities, trainings, and resources.

  • Regular programming (“Office Hours”) on current and emerging topics and tactics.

  • Advisors and experts dedicated to connecting and supporting student changemakers.

  • Financial contributions are administered through a participatory funding process. SANE’s student and adult reviewers from across the U.S. make funding decisions to support student and intergenerational groups committed to racial justice, equity, and achieving the promise of a multicultiracial democracy in schools and communities.

IS MY GROUP A GOOD FIT FOR SANE?

Some organizations in the Student Action Network for Equity are large with broad areas of focus affecting multiple schools or states. Other groups are small and organize around a specific injustice they want to change at the school or community level. We have SANE members from across rural, urban, and suburban communities. All are welcome!

If you are interested in learning more and/or being part of this effort, please contact Lydia Burns at lydia@seekcommonground.org. We would love to hear more about your organization, what barriers you face (resource and otherwise), and what you are hoping to learn and share as a SANE member.

Victories from the Front Lines: LGBTQ+ Student Change-Makers

Seek Common Ground held a conversation during Pride Month 2023 with national LGBTQ+ student change-makers who are on the front lines of fighting and organizing for LGBTQ+ rights and lasting, equitable change in our education systems and beyond.

How Students Organize for Equity

Seek Common Ground’ s Manager of Youth and Community Partnerships, Lydia Burns, sat down with members of SCG's Student Action Network for Equity to talk about how students are organizing against classroom censorship and for educational equity.

Now in it's second year, SANE has supported student and intergenerational efforts across 26 states and 55+ organizations. Through our unique participatory funding process, SANE has contributed over half a million dollars to support a growing movement of youth organizers, deconstructing the barriers that systemically deny young people access to change-making work.
